Let's rap about spam filters.
Specifically, this whole idea of obsessing over whether or not your
subject line is gonna trigger spam filters or whatever.
I can see why people worry about this.
But they're focusing on the wrong thing.
They be playing to not lose instead of playing to win.
Example:
When you subscribe to "Email Players" --
http://www.EmailPlayers.com -- (how's that for a shameless plug?)
you are given a chance to join a private Google group where you can
ask questions, network, show off your skillz, etc.
Anyway, this topic was brought up.
And my boy Kevin Dawson put it perfectly:
"Really, folks, you can get so paranoid about triggering SPAM
filters that you won't even write an email."
Word up.
That's exactly it!
I NEVER worry about the spam trigger "boogyman."
Ever.
Not even during special sales or launches.
Why?
Lots of reasons:
1. Email is very "forgiving"
(i.e. you can screw up today, and do it right tomorrow)
2. The message is king, not the spam filter
3. Not all spam filters are super air tight, many are getting very
smart (and I say it's about time...)
And finally:
Do email right (the way I teach), and people will get your emails.
They'll adjust their spam settings.
They'll complain to their paranoid ISP's.
And, they'll literally ask you:
"Dude, are you okay,
I haven't heard from
you in a while!"
I'm not saying to go crazy.
But I just think it's foolish to worry about it -- just like I
think it's foolish to obsess over "open rates", click thrus, or if
your email broadcasting service is on the fritz temporarily.
What I care about are SALES.
So get those emails out.
Do them the right way.
And, the rest will take care of itself.
What???
You don't believe me?
Hey, as my friend Greg Perry so eloquently says:
"No need to disagree
because I just declared truth.
And you cannot argue with truth."
That's all I'm sayin'.
