I once saw an amusing article on yahoo.
The article title was:
"Words 'Viral' And 'Epic' Consigned To College Trash"
It was about words some professor types think should be banished
from the language because, well, I guess they don't like them. Or,
as they put it: "terms so overused, misused and hackneyed they
deserve to be sent to a permanent linguistic trash can in the year
ahead."
Here are some of the "offending" words:
"man up"
"Viral"
"epic"
"fail"
"wow factor"
"a-ha moment"
"back story"
"Google" (used as a verb)
Anyway, here's why this is amusing:
These "dumbed down" words are PERFECT for email.
Why?
Because they're easily understood.
Instantly clear.
And you can often "say" more with a few crude phrases like "google
it" or "ah-ha moment" or "going viral" than you can with an entire
paragraph of intellectual babble used by people trying to make up
for something, er... small... by always using $50 words when a $5
word gets the job done.
Like it or lump it -- people are being dumbed down.
You can whine about it.
Or you can man up and earn epic profits from it.
Choice is yours.
