One of my favorite business quotes is from... the Joker!
It was in "The Dark Knight" when he said:
"If you're good at something
never do it for free"
Very true.
Very true indeed.
But for some reason, certain would-be clients actually think I'm going to work for free. Forget for a moment that I don't even do client work right now. But, they're as insane as the Joker if they think I'm going to work on their project on "spec" or whatever.
I get these offers ALL the time.
So do other copywriters.
For example:
If they "let" me write their emails and sales letters, they'll give me a percentage of the sales. Or even (and this is my favorite) give me a cut of the extra sales they get over and above what they're doing now.
Their generosity astounds me.
But, my answer is always the same:
Hell naw!
Ain't gonna happen, Butch.
I used to waste my life on projects like that when just starting out. But I came to my senses and did some, you know, *math*... and realized it's far more profitable and fun working my own projects and keeping all the sales, than slaving over someone else's projects for the scraps left over.
So take it somewhere else, Spec Boys.
If I was to take clients again, it'd be cash only.
No % of sales.
No stock in the company.
No spec deals of any kind.
Same with my "Email Players" -- http://www.EmailPlayers.com -- subscribers.
I forward them email copywriting opportunities I get.
But I don't insult them with spec offers.
They're better off working their own projects.
Alright, that's it for today.
Tomorrow?
Something else...

P.S. Thank you to everyone who left a review for my "Blue Chip Email Secrets" book. I thought they were ALL interesting. So if you didn't win the contest (most interesting review gets a free "Email Players" issue), it's not because you suck.
It's just I only had 3 choices to pick from.
The winners are...
1. Jon McCulloch (the only person to do a video review)
2. Sanjay Pande (whose review also contains valuable tips)
3. Robert (last name unknown -- whose 3 star review contains his own bullets and page number references, which was really cool)
Anyway, thanks for showing us some skillz, boys.
Now get back to writing those emails...
